1 oz Gold Mark Twains

Many years ago at release I purchased a dozen one ounce gold Mark Twains. Is there any numismatic value here? either positive or perhaps negative? I had forgotten them and have just thought of them as ounces like Kruggerrands and Maple Leafs.

Probably not. APMEX is selling them for $20 over spot on their gold wholesale page.

They are called Post Office Gold.
Louie Armstrong and Marion Anderson where other coins [medals] minted that year. They are worst than Rands when it comes to selling them.
In order Eagles & Buffalos are the best, Maples, Pandas, Philharmonics next, Rands,Pesos, last Post Office.
In reality you should get spot on Eagles & Buffalos
2% back on Maples, Pandas, Philhamonics
3% back on Rands
4 to 5% back on post office

I disagree! It depends on many factors, supply and demand is important, market action another. I don't believe any prices are etched in stone during a volatile bull market, just weeks ago APMEX was paying spot to a few dollars under for Krands, last week they we paying $3-7 under for K's. I've read where a poster recommended to check the spread of buy and sell before buying, even though prices change by the seconds...

The Department Of The Treasury,

American Arts Gold Medallion, Fisch coin detectors refers to it as U.S. Gold. Frequently selling for less than spot on E-Bay because people either don't know about them or think they will be harder to resell down the road. I love them.:tongue_ma::tongue_ma::tongue_ma:http://cgi.ebay.com/1980-American-Ar...QQcmdZViewItem And http://cgi.ebay.com/Grant-Wood-Ameri...QQcmdZViewItem

They don't have a weight or fineness stamped on the coin, so I think it would be harder to sell.

The earlier coins did not have a weight stamp on them, later ones did. The finess was .900, 21.6K.:bear_w00t:http://cgi.ebay.com/GOLD-American-Ar...QQcmdZViewItem

Re: 1 oz Gold Mark Twains

I just sold my Grant Woods, 1 ounce and Marian Anderson 1/2 Commerative art coins to APMEX. They gave 98% of spot. I sold these for the very same reasons mentioned above, no mention on the coin of what the metal content is. IMO for a coin to be real money it must state, at minimum, what it's metal content is. The mint produced this series from 1980 to 1984. It was their 1st attempt to compete with the Krugerrand. By 1982 they start to include metal content as the Louis Armstrong coin I have say one ounce gold on it. All in all the program was a flop and I've read that many of the unsold coins where wholesaled out and then melted. IMO there is no collector interest in these coins.

Glad you got out at the price you did......you would have gotten RAPED if you took that to a local shop looking to sell. That was a smart move on your part you went with a bigger firm,

I've been wanting to dump them for awhile and I was watching how they did on ebay. I sold at spot $985.20 x .98 = $ 965.49. I've been going through my stash and selling off all the things that don't conform to my criteria for money. If you have to go to a book to look up it's metal content it going up for sale. Iffen we get a decent correction I will buy back real money. This was a lesson learned over many years. :smokin:

Shops differ, find a different shop, Mine is more honest than yours and treats these coins like eagles or krugs.:s9:

PM me if you want to get rid of a few of those Mark Twain medallions...
I love 'em...
90% Au...10%copper alloy...1.1 troy ounce coin weight and contain 1 oz troy AGW...same as a krug, metallurgically ....
They are not marked gold, which was an idiot mistake by the mint....But those that know will know...
Mark my words...in a SHTF scenario...people are going to become coin experts overnight...These coins are well known enough to move...no prob...
PM me if you want to let me steal some from you...

I've got a Grant Wood 1 oz'er that I'd trade for 45 oz of silver or 9 1/10 oz AGE's. I hate the coin.
